Who are the DKCPC?

DKCPC (Danish Cable Protection Committee) is an association of telecommunications and electricity companies, which own submarine cables in Danish territorial waters. The purpose of the association is to improve the protection of submarine cables to ensure security of supplies as well as the market supply of electricity and telecommunications services.

Denmark's infrastructure

Telecommunications and electricity are an important part of Denmark's infrastructure. The cables, which are located in the Danish territorial waters, require special attention, because they may be unintentionally damaged by fishing gear and anchors. Repairs to the submarine cables are expensive and lengthy compared with repairs on land. Damage to submarine cables will therefore affect particularly security of supplies as well as the market supply of electricity and telecommunications services.

Protection zone

The cables will usually lie buried in the seabed, but as the seabed can move, there is no guarantee cables will remain buried. This is the very reason why in Danish waters there is a 200 meter protection zone each side of the cable, where anchoring and fishing activity is not allowed.
